Glorify your breakfast at Peg's Glorified Ham n Eggs.

To contact us Click HERE

The last time I stayed in Reno backin 2007 I had a delightful breakfast at Peg'sGlorified Ham n Eggs on Sierra, a stone's throw south of theTruckee Riveras it courses through downtown. In anticipation of a similarexperience I easily talked a friend into breakfast on a recentvisit.

My dining companion went for her standard breakfast of eggs, bacon and hash browns, while I sought spicier fare with a CajunBenedict with Cajunsausage, topped with a chipotle Hollandaisesauce, including a side of hash browns and slice of melon. I also optedto Glorify [my] Breakfast with added sides of picode gallo, cabbage slaw, and pinto beans.

Peg's prides themselves with the plethora of Benedictsthey offer and mine was none less tasty. The sausage was spicy butnot picante, the poached eggs were perfect, and the chipotleHollandaise sauce was awe inspiring. Rich and creamy but sportinga serious kick. The slice of raw jalapeño atop made for anappropriate garnish: a portent of things to come. The plank ofhash browns were crisp and not oily.

The pico of tomato, cucumber, corn and onion was unique and cleantasting with its light flavors. Cabbage slaw with a few whiskersof carrot was appealingly crisp; a little oily but notoff-putting. Pintos with a sprinkling of shredded cheddar werefirm and tasty.

My friend's rasher of bacon was substantial enough to offer me afew slices to enjoy; thick and crisp!

For any visit to Reno, Peg's Glorified Ham n Eggs is anappropriate start to a day of adventure, or in my case a latemorning spent lounging in bed, sated.

A fine brunch at Bertha Miranda's in Reno.

To contact us Click HERE

Bertha Miranda's MexicanRestaurant is quite the oasis once through its doors withlight streaming in through the sunroof, potted plants all about, and comfy leather-upholstered wicker seats to settle back in.

The table salsa is very loose but quite zesty if you care to sipa mouthful. Save some to spoon over a side of rice.

For starters I sampled the Sausage and Bean Dip, adelicious, substantial chip topper. With salsa verde, sautéed onion and melted cheese it's the real deal! Offeredeither hot or mild, I chose hot. Zesty, savory! A meal in its ownright.

For main course I enjoyed a plate of Enchiladas Montadas– stacked cheese enchiladas with your choice of sauces, red orgreen, and style of egg served atop, scrambled or over easy – withsides of fluffy rice and creamy refried beans. The red sauce israther akin to a Tex-Mex chili gravy; thick, rich, comforting. Thecheese within is abundant and well melted. Overall a fine brunch.

A hearty appetite is a prerequisite for breakfast at Omaha's 11-Worth Cafe.

To contact us Click HERE

After a long train ride across Nebraska – punctuated with disturbing dreams – Idisembarked in Omaha for a chilly, half-hour walk in the earlymorning darkness with a destination in mind… the 11-Worth Cafe.

The huge four-egg 11-Worth Omelet is chocked fullof ham, bacon, and breakfast sausage with enough melted Americancheese to bind the meaty ingredients together. A further slice ofcheese with a sprinkle of the meat mélange rests atop, anappealing sign of what lies inside.

Along with the sizable omelet, the dish also comes with sideshash browns, country gravy with sausage, and choice of toast orbaked good. The plentiful plank of hash browns is about par forbrownness. The country gravy is peppery, with bits of sausagethroughout. Dashes of Trappey'sRed Devil sauce makes the perfect condiment for all theomelet's richness. Big English muffins from Omaha's own Rotella's Italian Bakeryare a nice surprise and rather good.

With frequent refills of coffee and a pleasant, attentive server, all I needed was a second stomach for the interestingly-namedRobert E. Lee, with sausage patties, biscuits and more of the11-Worth's delicious gravy. I had to content myself with anothervisit, hopefully soon.

Fans of the Cheese Frenchee rejoice! Angelo's brings the classic sandwich back to Des Moines.

To contact us Click HERE

King’s Food Host was a regional fast-food chain that opened theirfirst location in Lincoln, Nebraska back in 1955, and experiencedphenomenal growth thru the 1960s with over a hundred locationsacross 17 states and at least one Canadian province. Des Moineswas home to a few, most notably on the corner of 18th & Grand, across the street from TechHigh. However, King's fortunes declined greatly in the 1970swith the last remaining outlets being sold off in 1978.

Aside from the telephones at each table that customers used toplace their orders, King's was famous for a quirky cornflake-encrusted sandwich called the Cheese Frenchee.Back in the 80s when I worked for a political non-profit with asatellite office in Council Bluffs, I would go across the streetto enjoy a version of the Cheese Frenchee at alittle Greek gyro joint in the old Midlands Mall, long sincere-purposed as a business center.

Recipes for the deep-fried treat abound on the web, touting suchingredients as Russiandressing and powdered cheese. I don't know about suchingredients, but who cares since Angelo's Pizza – the same folkswho introduced Cincinnati chili to Des Moines [seeblog post] – now offer a Cheese Frenchieon their ever-expanding menu.

Cut into a quad of triangles with a golden exterior sportinglittle extrusions of cheese along the edges, the crispy cornflake coating presents a pleasing sweetness. More melted cheese awaitsinside, along with an unexpected tang I assume to be a thin veneerof salad dressing. On the whole a crispy, cheesy, decadent treat!

Since opening their second location near the Capitol Complexalong with the debut of Cincinnatichili on their menu, Angelo's has experiencedconsiderable success. State workers familiar with the E. 14thAngelo's eats while on lunch break now frequent the West DesMoines location for evening fare.

Now Angelo's has ventured into an arrangement with PintsPub n Patio at Court & Fourth, pitching their selectionof pizzas, chili, sandwiches, and appetizers to downtown workerbees on their lunch break and late-night partiers seeking analcohol sponge. With the new location, more appetizers have beenadded to the menu including Jalapeño MozzarellaSticks with a raspberry-jalapeño dipping sauce,as pictured below.

A couple of weekends ago, one of my favorite Saturday morningpair of baristas at AmiciEspresso was leaving and I wanted to treat the duo withbreakfast. Taking advantage of Angelo's new digs nearby I broughtover a Breakfast Pizza, only available as a 16-inchordered a day in advance.

The Breakfast Pizza was quite unique with a baseof chunky salsa ladled over Angelo's thin crust. The zest of salsapaired with the crispy, tender crust makes the pizza a standoutagainst the Farmers'Market breakfast pizzas offered by nearby Fong's andSomething Italian [see blog posts from July1, 2011, and August4, 2012]. Black olives, onion, green pepper, scrambled eggs, thin-sliced ham, and cheddar finish the build. Cutinto a dozen slices, our happy trio plus one lucky coffee shoppatron oohed and aahed over every bite.

Having been a fan of Angelo's long before their expansioneastward, I am hopeful for success with their new kitchen onCourt. Given the youthful, boozy clientele that Pints attracts atnight, I'll likely stick to carryout. In fairness, I barelytolerate the cramped bar scene at Fong's long enough to grab a fewslices and make a hasty retreat to Walnut St. to enjoy mylate-night repast.

Recent eats: 5 de Mayo, Firehouse Lounge, Zanzibar's

To contact us Click HERE

Sampling the Enchiladas Rancheras at 5 de Mayo I was impressedwith the bright enchilada sauce, chocked full of grilled tomatoes, bell peppers and onions. The cheese enchiladas beneath wereproperly melted throughout. Rice dominates a third of the plate, while a cool guacamole and lettuce salad with a slice of tomatocompleted the dish. My table-mate enjoyed pork carnitas – porktips garnished with a slew of grilled onions.

I've frequented the FirehouseLounge on S.E. Sixth the past few years for libations andbreakfast. A couple of dishes I've tried include the “Everything”omelet and a breakfast burrito so ladenwith eggs, cheese, and sausage the only way to eat it is open face.

Missing an opportunity for breakfast one Saturday morning I optfor a Veggie Burger, named not for being a meatlesspatty but for the mound of lettuce, tomato and onion heaped uponit. For a frozen burger cooked on the grill it wasn't bad at all,in fact it was rather tasty with well-defined grill marks.

It's no secret my fondness for the rooibos tea espresso and the LindaSpecial at Zanzibar's on Ingersoll [seeblog post]. If you're not familiar with the LindaSpecial its your choice of toast or bagel topped withcream cheese, cheddar and scallions, then broiled.

A popular option is to mix steamed scrambled egg in with thetoppings before broiling. It's tasty but I find the Linda Specialmore appealing sans egg.
